About the game

Is the cat a solid or a liquid? In Non-Mewtonian Cat the honest answer is "both, depending on the level". You play a long, dark cat who moves square by square across floating islands. Your body follows your head like a snake, so every step has to leave room for the tail, and when nothing is under you the whole cat drops until something catches it.

What you pick up changes how you fit. Some pickups make the cat longer, which lets it bridge a gap or hold on to a ledge; others shrink it, so it can slip into a space it could not reach before. Hazards are the other half of the puzzle. Touch one and the game takes your last move back, which makes planning a path more important than speed. The goal of each level is the dark swirl at the other end of the island.

There are nine levels, unlocked one after another from a level-select screen where a lock marks what you have not reached yet. Finished levels are remembered by your browser. The graphics are drawn by code, the sound effects are tiny synthesised tunes, and the whole game had to fit in 13 kilobytes for the js13kGames competition of 2025, whose theme was "Black Cat".

Playing it here

Click Play, then click once on the title screen to start; the level-select screen follows. Pick level 1 with the mouse or the arrow keys and press a direction to begin. If you get stuck, undo as many moves as you like with Z or restart the level with R. Music and effects start after your first click.

A few things worth knowing

Think about the tail. The cat only moves in a straight step, and the body has to follow, so work out where each segment will end up before you commit to a direction.

Gravity is your friend and your enemy. A cat that hangs off a ledge can fall in a useful direction. Use it to reach a lower platform, but check that the landing is not a hazard.

Undo is free. There is no move limit or score, so try ideas out and take them back.
