About the game
Octo Party Mix! throws a quick run of microgames at you, each one only a few seconds long, with a lit fuse at the bottom of the screen counting down. A word flashes up to tell you what to do, and then you have to do it before the bomb goes off.
There are three challenges, picked at random. In DIG! you hammer the action button to shovel down to a buried treasure. In HAT! a top hat glides across the top of the screen, and you drop it so it lands right on the octopus's head. In FOLLOW ME! a dancing coach strikes poses and you copy each one in order.
You start with four lives, shown as little octopuses between rounds. Failing a challenge costs one, and every round you survive adds a point. Every few rounds the game announces LEVEL UP!: more digging, a faster hat, longer dances. When the last life is gone you get your final score.
Playing it here
Octo Party Mix! is a CHIP-8 program. CHIP-8 is a simple virtual machine from 1977, created for hobby computers like the COSMAC VIP, and people still write new games for it. This one targets XO-CHIP, a modern extension with extra colours, more memory and better sound, and was made for Octojam 7, a yearly CHIP-8 game jam. It runs here in the Octo emulator, with the speed and colours chosen for it in the archive.
Click Play, then press E or Space to start. F2 saves the state of the emulator at any moment and F4 brings it back. A gamepad works too: A is the action button and the D-pad dances. On a phone or tablet, tap for the action button and swipe for the dance moves.
Controls
| Key | Action |
|---|---|
| E or Space | start; dig (press repeatedly); drop the hat |
| W A S D or arrow keys | copy the coach's moves: up, left, down, right |
| E or Space (game over) | back to the title screen |
| F2 / F4 | save / load the state |
A few things worth knowing
Read the word, then act. The instruction that flashes before each round is the only hint you get. DIG! and HAT! use the action button, FOLLOW ME! uses the direction keys.
Digging needs separate presses. The shovel only goes in on a fresh press, so holding the key down does nothing. Tap it quickly instead.
One wrong step ends the dance. In FOLLOW ME! a move that differs from the coach's loses the round at once, so wait for the pose to appear before you copy it.
