About the game
Octopeg is a game about knocking out pegs. A cannon sits at the top of the screen above several rows of small pegs. You place an aiming cross, fire, and the ball bounces its way down, removing every peg it touches, until it falls into one of the chutes at the bottom.
Each level gives you a number of shots, shown in the top left corner, and the count gets smaller as the game goes on. When the shots run out you move to the next level; there are eight, and you cannot lose, so the challenge is the score. Two bars frame the playfield. The one on the left fills as you hit pegs and gives you an extra shot when it is full. The one on the right is the combo bar: it fills faster when a single shot hits many pegs, makes each peg worth more, and when full it starts a fever round with bonus points depending on the chute the ball lands in.
Playing it here
This is a CHIP-8 program. CHIP-8 is a small virtual machine from 1977, created for hobby computers such as the COSMAC VIP, and people still write new games for it today. Octopeg targets SUPER-CHIP, a later extension of CHIP-8, and was made for Octojam 2, a CHIP-8 game jam held in October 2015. It runs here in the Octo emulator. Click Play and press one of the game keys to start.
F2 saves the state of the emulator at any moment and F4 brings it back. A gamepad works too: the D-pad aims and the A button fires.
Controls
| Key | Action |
|---|---|
| W A S D or arrow keys | move the aiming cross |
| E or Space | fire the ball |
| Q | end the turn if the ball is stuck for good |
| F2 / F4 | save / load the state |
A few things worth knowing
Watch the moving chute. One of the chutes at the bottom holds a moving marker. If your ball falls into it you get a free ball, an extra shot for the level.
Long shots pay twice. The more pegs one ball hits, the faster the combo bar on the right fills, and a fuller combo bar raises the value of every peg.
Make the fever count. During fever the middle chutes give the biggest bonus, and the combo bar empties afterwards. The combo bar resets every level, while the bar on the left carries over.
