About the game

You are the new office manager, and the boss has left you a note: the next performance review is in 404 days, the office must be kept tidy, and there is room to find for the newcomers. Under the dry joke is a tidy little puzzle of matching and merging.

The office is a grid of carpet tiles, a six-by-six floor in a chunky pixel style. You place the objects you get, such as archive boxes, desks with computers, filing cabinets and plants, and when three of the same kind end up next to each other they merge into a different and more valuable object, which can merge again later. Each move counts as a day, so the counter at the top is how many moves you have left. The money you earn can be spent in the shop at the bottom, where the price of the next item is shown. Get through all 404 days with room to spare and you are promoted; fill the floor so that nothing more can be placed, and you are fired.

The graphics are tiny pixel art scaled up to fill the screen, with a red "404!" that wobbles over the title and a short soundtrack that was made in the game's own code. The screen is built for a phone held upright, so on a computer it appears as a narrow column in the middle of the page.

A run ends in one of two ways, a promotion or a dismissal, and then a click starts a new one.

Csaba Csecskedi made it for js13kGames 2020, a contest where the whole game has to fit in 13 kilobytes. The original asked for Web Monetization and had a share button for a social network; this version leaves both out, so everyone plays the same game and nothing is sent to another site.

Click Play, then click the title screen to start (the sound begins at once, so check your volume) and press "New game". If you leave and come back, the game offers to continue where you stopped, using the save in this browser.

A few things worth knowing

Plan the merges. Three alike merge, so keep similar objects close to each other rather than spreading them over the floor.

An empty floor is your safety net. A full office ends the game, so keep free tiles for what comes next.

Mind the days. The counter goes down with every move, and reaching zero with a free floor is how you win.
