About the game

The mayor of this town has a plan for it and a warrant out for his arrest. You drive a small red car through an empty map of roads while police cars come after you, and between the chases you have to build the town: houses, office buildings, a hospital and a fire station.

The car goes forward on its own and you only steer, which makes the chase a game about corners rather than about speed. A glowing arrow marks the next stop. Drive through it and your advisor, the little man at the bottom of the screen, asks for a certain kind of building in a thought bubble. A spot on the map lights up near you and you place the building there with one button, even while the siren is behind you. Where you put it matters: next to the right neighbours it scores more and earns a thumbs up, and in a bad spot it earns a thumbs down. The police cars chase you through the streets, and every crash costs one of your cars. Fill the whole map and the police vanish in a cloud of explosions.

It is a game-jam game, made in a few days, with a rough sense of humour (the game-over screen insults you in a flood of coloured text) and a strong look: chunky pixel art, a cheerful soundtrack and a jingle on the title screen.

Playing it here

Click Play, wait a moment for the game to load (about 7 MB, downloaded only when you press the button), click once inside it so that it gets the keyboard, and press X on the title screen.

Controls

Input Action
Left and Right arrows steer the car (it always drives forward)
Z (hold) speed up
X place the building you were asked for, start the game, restart after a game over
Gamepad stick or d-pad to steer, A to speed up, X to place

Tips

Take the corners wide. The car turns at a fixed rate, so a tight corner at full speed means a wall. Let go of Z before the turn.

Keep moving. The police do not stop, so place a building as you pass the lit spot instead of circling back to it.

Think about neighbours. The first few buildings score the same wherever they go. After that, notice what stands around the lit spot before you place a building, and watch the thumbs.

FAQ

Does it work on a phone? No. It needs a keyboard or a gamepad.

Is my progress saved? No, a game lasts a few minutes.

Is there an ending? Yes, if you fill every spot of the map before the police catch you for the last time.

Credits and licence

Outlaw Mayor Panic! was made by Will Blanton (01010111) for Ludum Dare 41 with the HaxeFlixel engine, Aseprite for the art and FL Studio for the music. The code, art and music are published by the author under the MIT licence, whose text is hosted next to the game together with the build script, the patch used to compile it for the web and the licences of the libraries it uses. The default font of the engine is replaced by Jersey 20, Copyright 2023 The Soft Type Project Authors, SIL Open Font License 1.1.

This version is compiled for the web from the original source. The changes are a few lines of code to make it work with current versions of the engine and its libraries (the author used an unpublished build of one of them), a free font in place of the engine's default one, and the removal of one of the insults shown on the game-over screen.
