About the game

Parallel Overhead is an endless runner with a simple idea. You steer two ships, Truth and Beauty, that fly on opposite walls of a hyperspace tunnel, and the tunnel is almost stable. Its walls are made of tiles, and some of the tiles are missing. A ship that flies over a gap falls through the crack and is lost. Because the two ships are always on opposite sides, you move both of them with the same key, and a safe path for one of them is rarely safe for the other.

Every time a ship is lost the tunnel gets harder, with more holes and fewer safe paths, and the whole thing speeds up the longer you survive. A run ends when both ships are gone, and the game keeps your best time and distance. It is a quick game, easy to start over, and built from very few pieces: flat colours, a pair of pixel ships and a pulsing electronic soundtrack.

Photosensitivity warning. This game is visually intensive. It has rapidly changing colours and flashing lights that can trigger seizures in people with photosensitive epilepsy. If you are affected, do not play it.

Playing it here

Click Play and, after the warning, press the start button. The game then downloads about 11 MB, only after your click. It starts paused: press Space to begin, so you have time to get ready. Your best run is stored in this browser. The game also works with a mouse or touch screen: tap the left or right quarter of the screen to steer.

Tips

Think about both ships. Both always move together, so look for a path that is safe for the pair, not for one ship only.

Look ahead. The holes are visible in the distance, deep in the tunnel; start steering early.

Lose one ship, keep playing. After a ship is lost the other one keeps going, but the tunnel is harder, so use that time to improve your best distance.

Credits and licence

Parallel Overhead was made by Linus Vanas. The code is under the MIT licence; the graphics, sound effects and the music projects have CC0 1.0 licence files.

  • Music: "Fast Pulse" and "Unstable Pulse" by oglsdl, CC0. Sources: Fast Pulse and Unstable Pulse.
  • Changes in this version: the two music tracks are stored in a compressed format (IMA ADPCM) to make the download smaller; Escape does not close the game; the sound effects share the audio output with the music.
