About the game

Someone has picked all the bananas from the trees, and you are the hungry one. Luckily, a few were dropped. In every level there is exactly one banana lying around. Reach it, eat it, and carry the peel to the recycle bin to finish the level. The trick is getting there: the level is a small grid of ladders, solid ground and a few special blocks, and the straight path is almost never open.

The special blocks carry an arrow. Stand on one, press B, and the block moves one step in the direction it points (if the space is free), often carrying you along. Left, right, up and down blocks let you build your own stairs, bridges and lifts, but every push changes the layout, so the order of your moves matters. Some tiles are deadly, and some levels are wider or taller than the screen, so you can switch on a camera mode to look around before you commit.

It is a gentle puzzle game with a clever core idea. The early levels are small and forgiving, and the later ones grow into proper brain teasers. Mr.Blinky made it for the Arduboy Banana Jam in April 2025.

Playing it here

This is a homebrew game made for the Arduboy, the open, credit-card-sized handheld with a tiny black-and-white screen: a new game by an independent developer, not a commercial release. It runs here in Ardens, an Arduboy emulator. Click Play now and press X on the title screen to start; Z opens a short help page.

F2 saves the complete state of the game at any moment, and F4 brings it back. A gamepad works too.

Controls

Key Arduboy button Action
Left / right D-pad walk (or move the camera in camera mode)
Up / down D-pad climb a ladder (or move the camera)
X B move the block under you in the direction of its arrow
Z A turn camera mode on or off
Hold Z A restart the level
F2 / F4 — save / load the state

A few things worth knowing

Use the camera. Some levels are bigger than the screen. Press Z to pause the game and look around before you move anything.

Stuck? Restart. Holding Z restarts the level, which is the quickest way out of a position you can no longer solve.

Blocks move you, too. A block you stand on can carry you along. That is how you reach the places a ladder can't.

Credits and licence

Puzzle Banana was made by Mr.Blinky, who placed it in the public domain under CC0 1.0. The game is built with the Arduboy2 library (BSD 3-clause licence) and the Arduino AVR core (LGPL 2.1), so the source code of the game, of the library and of the core is hosted alongside it.
