About the game

Race for the PS9 is a vertical shooter with a race built around it. A clock runs in the corner of the screen, and the whole point of the game is to finish with the clock still in the positive. Each sector of the course costs time, and what you do inside it decides how much: dodge and shoot your way past the hostile ships, cut through an asteroid field, grab coins, or pay for a toll wormhole that skips ahead.

Between sectors you pick the next stretch of the route from a list that includes a hostile sector, an asteroid field, a coin sector, a toll wormhole, a shop, a shortcut and a detour. The shop is where the coins you collect become weapons (scatter shot, charge shot, double shot, a ray of doom, a boomerang) and warp drive upgrades that make the later legs of the course faster. At the end the game tells you whether you won or lost the race and shows your final time, your coins and your time bonus.

Playing it here

This is a homebrew game made for the Game Boy Color: a new game by an independent developer, not a commercial release. It runs here in binjgb, a Game Boy emulator written in C and compiled to WebAssembly. Click Play now and press Enter on the title screen. F2 saves the emulator state in this browser and F4 brings it back.

Controls

Key Game Boy button Action
Arrow keys Control Pad fly the ship; pick entries in menus
X A fire your first weapon; confirm
Z B fire your second weapon; leave the shop
Enter Start start the game
F2 / F4 — save / load the emulator state

A few things worth knowing

Time is the score. Every choice on the route changes how much time you will have left, so a shop or a detour is a trade between safety and speed.

Two weapons at once. A and B each fire the weapon you have put on that button, so a charge weapon on one and a spread shot on the other covers both close and far targets.

Buy warp drives early. The warp drive levels shorten the time later sectors cost, which pays back the coins faster than a new gun does.

Credits and licence

Race for the PS9 is by Joserichi, made for the GB Compo 2025 game jam. The code, pixel art and music are released by the author under the GNU General Public License version 3, and the music player is hUGEDriver, in the public domain. The author does not publish a ready-made ROM in the repository, so the one served here was compiled, unchanged, from the source code with RGBDS. Because the licence is a copyleft one, the exact source and the build script are hosted next to the ROM, and the full licence text is linked from this page.
