About the game

Randocity is a motorcycle game set in a city far too big for the tiny screen it runs on. The streets are not stored anywhere: they are generated from a single number, the seed, so the city is 256 by 256 blocks and the same seed always builds the same streets and gravel roads. Change the seed and you get a whole new city to ride through.

The view follows the motorcycle from above, and a mini-map at the side shows the blocks around you. There are three ways to play. Free Play just lets you ride and explore. Race to the Edge drops you in the middle of the city and times how long you take to leave it by any side. Crazy Courier puts a package somewhere nearby and gives you two minutes to reach it; every pickup scores more the faster you were, resets the clock and places the next package. Run out of time and the delivery shift is over.

Your best time and your best courier score are kept together with the seed of the city where you set them, so you can go back to the same streets and try again, or note the seed down and challenge a friend on the same map.

Playing it here

This is a homebrew game made for the Arduboy, the open, credit-card-sized handheld with a tiny black-and-white screen: a new game by an independent developer, not a commercial release. It runs here in Ardens, an Arduboy emulator. Click Play now, press X on the title screen and pick FREE PLAY or NEW GAME from the menu. HELP explains the controls and the modes in a few short pages.

The records are saved in the emulated memory of the Arduboy, which is kept in this browser automatically. F2 also saves the complete state of the game at any moment, and F4 brings it back. A gamepad works too.

Controls

Key Arduboy button Action
Left / right D-pad turn (an eighth of a turn per tap)
X B speed up (each tap adds speed); select in menus
Z A slow down (each tap); go back in menus
Down + Z D-pad + A pause (in Free Play, back to the menu)
Arrows D-pad on VIEW MAP, scroll the map; on CHANGE SEED, edit the digits
F2 / F4 — save / load the state

A few things worth knowing

Riding off the road stops you. The motorcycle halts as soon as it leaves the pavement. Turn back towards the street and tap X a few times to get moving again.

Speed comes in taps. Holding a button does nothing: each press of X adds a step of speed and each press of Z takes one away, so a corner is easier with a quick tap of Z before you turn.

Watch the mini-map in Crazy Courier. A blinking mark shows where the package is; when it sits on the edge of the mini-map, the package is still further out in that direction.

Pick your city. NEW GAME, CHANGE SEED lets you roll a random city, go back to the city of either record, or type in a seed of your own, digit by digit. VIEW MAP lets you scroll around the current city before you ride.
