About the game
Tux the penguin goes fishing one cold morning and finds a notice: the Snow King now owns the island, and every resident owes him a share of their fish. Tux does not take it well. ReTux is a classic side-scrolling platformer about what happens next: you run, jump on enemies, hit blocks from below, grab coins, ride springs and go through doors and pipes, level after level. Between the levels there is a world map where the paths open up as you clear them.
There are 41 levels in five worlds, from snowy fields to caves and a castle, with enemies that change from world to world and a boss to beat at the end of each one. Tux has five hearts of health, so a hit is not the end, and there is a time bonus that rewards running through a level quickly. Tux dolls are hidden in the levels; finding them is optional and counts toward the completion percentage of your save. Two small extra levelsets ride along (a castle level and a bonus level by another author) and you can pick them in the "Select Levelset" menu.
Playing it here
The first time you click Play the page downloads the Python runtime and the pygame library (about 23 MB), plus the game itself (about 25 MB, mostly pictures and music), which takes a little while; after that a "click to start" message appears, and one more click opens the title screen. The download is kept by your browser, so every other pygame game on the site opens faster. Nothing is loaded from other sites. Your saves and options are kept in this browser only, in ten save slots.
Pick "New Game" and a slot: the game opens with a short story scene (Tab or Backspace skips it) and then the world map. On the map, the arrow keys walk Tux along the paths and Space, Enter or X starts the level Tux stands on. The menus are in English. The Options menu has "Configure keyboard" if you want other keys. There is no fullscreen entry: use the page's own full-screen button. Importing levelsets from files is not available here.

Tips
Jump on enemies, not into them. Most enemies can be stomped, which also gives you a bounce to reach what is above; check before you land on anything that looks spiky.
Use the time bonus. The faster you finish a level, the more points the bonus gives, so a smooth run pays.
Go back for the dolls. Levels you have cleared stay open on the world map, so you can return for the Tux dolls you missed.
Frequently asked questions
Does it save my progress? Yes, in the browser, in ten slots. Clearing the site data erases them.
How long is it? Long: 41 levels. A full run takes several hours.
Does it work on a phone? It needs a keyboard, so it is meant for a computer.
Is it free? Yes. The game is free software: the code is under the GNU GPL, and the art, sound and music under the GPL, Creative Commons and other free licences.
Credits and licence
ReTux was made by The Diligent Circle (onpon4). The code is released under the GNU General Public License, version 3 or later. The graphics come from the SuperTux project, Connie Cartwright, 2D-Retroperspectives, Pow Studios, C.Nilsson and the author; the sounds from SuperTux contributors (wansti, MatzeB, Some_Person and others) and from freesound.org authors; the music from several composers; all of them are named, with their licences (GPL, CC BY-SA, CC BY, CC0), in the credits screen of the game and in the licence file. The game runs on the Pygame SGE and its xSGE extensions (LGPL-3.0-or-later). The version served here has some changes so it can run in a browser (the main loop and the menus can no longer wait inside loops, the Quit, Fullscreen and Import entries are gone, the default action key is X, the music is encoded at a lower bit rate, the Japanese font and the translations are left out, one sound effect is replaced by one generated for this site and the saves live in the browser); the changes, the full source and every licence text are linked from the Licenses page. The game also runs on pygame-ce (LGPL-2.1) and CPython, whose licences and source are linked there too.
