About the game

Reversi is a game of captured colours: every disc is black on one face and white on the other, and trapping your opponent's discs between two of yours flips them to your colour. The board changes hands all the time, so being ahead early means little; what counts is who holds the edges and corners at the end. This page offers the classic 8x8 board and six variations on its shape and size. In this library the game is also known as Annexation.

Game Board
Reversi (8x8) The classic board.
Reversi 6x6 A smaller board and a quicker game.
Reversi 4x4 A tiny board, over in a few moves.
Reversi 10x10 A big board for long games.
Reversi on a cross An 8x8 grid in the shape of a cross.
Reversi on a big cross The same idea on a larger grid.
Reversi turn-over An octagonal board with the corners cut off.

On your turn you place a disc on an empty square so that it traps one or more lines of the opponent's discs between it and another disc of yours, in any straight direction, and all the trapped discs flip to your colour. If you cannot make such a move, you pass. The game ends when neither player can move, and the one with more discs wins.

Playing it here

This page runs Jocly, a free library of board games with a computer opponent that thinks in the background while you wait. Pick a game in the Game menu at the top; You play chooses first, second or both sides (to play against a friend on the same screen), Computer level sets how hard the computer thinks, and New game starts again. Take back undoes your last move together with the reply, and Rules opens the rules of the game you picked. Everything runs in your browser and nothing is sent anywhere. Your choices (game, side, level and board) are kept in this browser; clearing the site's data erases them. The game is in English and has no sound.

Tips

Corners are gold. A disc in a corner can never be flipped, and it protects the discs along the edge next to it.

Fewer discs can be better early on. Flipping a lot of discs at once gives the opponent more moves. Aim to keep options for yourself and take few.

Mind the squares next to a corner. Placing a disc beside an empty corner often hands that corner to the opponent.

Credits

Jocly was made by Michel Gutierrez, who wrote the games and the computer player, and Jérôme Choain, who did the graphic design, and it is free software under the GNU Affero General Public License. Only the flat boards of the library are used here, not its 3D views, and its sound files are left out.
