About the game
Road TXTR is a driving game with a distracting passenger: your phone. The car travels along a straight road that scrolls by, and you steer it up and down between the lanes to avoid trees and pedestrians. Hitting them damages the car, and a progress counter at the top shows how much of the trip is left.
Meanwhile messages keep arriving from friends, family and a roommate with strange requests, each with two possible replies. The phone pops up over the screen and hides part of the road until you answer. Answer correctly and it goes away; answer wrongly and the car freezes for a moment. The questions are silly ("What is 1+1?"), which is the joke. Reach the end and a summary counts your good texts, your bad texts and the number of pedestrians you hit; get totalled and you start again.
Playing it here
Road TXTR was made for TIC-80, a fantasy console: an imaginary 1980s-style computer with a 240 by 136 screen and 16 colours, for which independent developers write new games. The team made it for Ludum Dare 51 in 2022, and it runs here in the official TIC-80 web player. Click Play, then wait for the intro. The title screen is a small test of its own: steer the car down to the "START GAME" line, answering the hint messages as they come. Esc opens the TIC-80 menu. A gamepad works directly, and on touch screens an on-screen D-pad and buttons appear.
The game has some mild cartoon crashes and a counter of pedestrians you hit, played for black comedy.

A few things worth knowing
Read the whole text. The replies are shown in a fixed order, and the right one is not always the first. A wrong answer freezes the car, which usually means a crash.
Look ahead. The phone covers part of the road, so steer into a free lane before a message arrives.
Do not rush the reply. Taking a moment to answer costs you less than a wrong answer does.
