About the game

Rockto is a digging puzzle set in small underground caves. Your miner tunnels through soft dirt, square by square, looking for diamonds. The catch is gravity: boulders and diamonds rest on the dirt below them, and as soon as you dig that support away, they drop straight down. Anything that lands on you ends the attempt.

Each cave has a door, and it only lets you through once every diamond has been collected. The number of diamonds left is shown at the bottom right of the screen, next to the cave number at the bottom left. You can push a boulder to the side if the square beyond it is empty, which is often the only way to clear a path or to stop something from falling where you need to stand.

The game is turn-based. Rocks only settle after you take a step, so you can stop and think as long as you like before each move.

Playing it here

Rockto is a CHIP-8 program. CHIP-8 is a simple virtual machine from 1977, created for hobby computers like the COSMAC VIP, and people still write new games for it. This one targets SUPER-CHIP, the later extension with a sharper 128 by 64 screen, and was made for Octojam 1, the first edition of a yearly CHIP-8 game jam. It runs here in the Octo emulator, with the speed and colours chosen for it in the archive.

Click Play and press any key on the title screen. F2 saves the state of the emulator at any moment and F4 brings it back, which is handy before a risky move. A gamepad works too: the D-pad moves.

Controls

Key Action
any key (title screen) start
W A S D or arrow keys move one square: up, left, down, right
1 restart the current cave
any key (after losing) try the cave again
F2 / F4 save / load the state

A few things worth knowing

Never dig down with a rock on your head. When you leave a square, whatever sits above it falls. Step sideways and the boulder or diamond just drops into the gap; step down and it follows you all the way and lands on you.

Boulders only move sideways. You cannot push a boulder up or down, and it will not budge if dirt, a wall or another object sits on the far side. Plan your tunnels so there is room to shove it.

Use 1 when you are stuck. A boulder that drops into the wrong tunnel can seal off the exit or the last diamond for good. Pressing 1 resets the cave to its starting layout.

Credits and licence

Rockto was created by SupSuper, who wrote the code, drew the graphics and designed the caves. It runs here in Octo, the CHIP-8 development tool and emulator by John Earnest (MIT licence). The game is kept in the Chip8 Community Archive, which places everything in it in the public domain under CC0 1.0. The licence text is linked from this page.
