About the game

Roll Tanks is a small tank battle played one turn at a time, where luck and planning share the controls. Two red tanks, yours, face three purple tanks on a checkered field dotted with trees. Each turn you pick one of your tanks and three big dice tumble onto the screen. You decide what each die is worth: one sets the tank's fuel (how far it can drive), one sets the inaccuracy of its shot, and one sets the strength of its shield. High numbers are great for fuel and shield, and a low one is what you want for inaccuracy, so every roll turns into a small puzzle about which die goes where.

After the dice are placed, the tank is yours. You drive it as far as the fuel allows, turn to face the enemy, set the elevation of the cannon and fire. Then the other side takes its turn. Health pickups appear on the field as the rounds go by, and the battle ends when one team has no tanks left. The best roll in the game is a 404, a nod to the js13kGames 2020 theme: it maxes out fuel and shield and makes the shot perfectly accurate.

David Durham made Roll Tanks for js13kGames 2020. The tanks, the dice, the trees and the clouds are drawn by the code and by small SVG images, and the whole game, in the original competition version, fits in 13 KB.

Playing it here

Click Play, then the round button on the title screen to start. On the first turn the game shows a short prompt for every step. Pick a red tank by clicking it, click a die to assign it to each stat as the prompts ask, then move the tank with the arrow keys and press Space to stop and aim; press Space again to fire. The pause button in the corner stops the game. Nothing is saved between visits.

A few things worth knowing

Think about the dice before the tank. A low roll is not a bad one if it goes into inaccuracy. Look at all three before deciding where each one goes.

Fuel is not just distance. A tank with little fuel is slow to reach a good position, but one that stays behind a tree is also harder to hit.

Mind the enemy's turn. The purple tanks aim and fire by themselves, so leave your wounded tanks out of their line of fire and pick up the health pickups when you can.
