About the game
Safe Space puts you in the boots of Dr. Heisenberg on a ship whose fusion reactors are melting down. The power is gone, and a voice on the terminal tells you to leave at once. The only protection is the SAFE SPACE, a small shielded room that keeps you safe from the radiation bursts that sweep through the corridors. The idea of every level is the same: reach a safe space, wait for the burst to pass, then run to the next one, until you get to the infirmary.
The game is seen through your own eyes, with a heavy, dark look made of metal plates, crates, hazard stripes and a fluorescent light that flickers in the corridor. Between levels a green terminal shows a short message. The graphics are generated by the code, there are no image files, and the whole game fits in the 13 KB of js13kGames 2021. The music and the sound effects are made with the ZzFX and ZzFXM libraries.
Playing it here
Click Play, then click once more on the title screen and again after each message on the green terminal, until the level starts. The browser asks to capture the mouse, which is how you look around, so the game needs a mouse (or a laptop trackpad) and a keyboard. Press Esc to pause and to get your mouse back, and click to continue.

A few things worth knowing
Use the shelter. Do not try to run through a burst. Stay inside the safe space until it has passed, and move on when the corridor is clear.
Look around. Boxes in the way can be jumped, and the next safe space is usually in sight before you leave the one you are in.
The terminal is the story. The messages between levels are short and tell you what to expect in the next one.
