About the game

SameGame is a classic puzzle with a long history on computers and handhelds, and this is OBONO's version for the Arduboy. The board is twenty blocks wide and ten tall, filled at random with five kinds of block, each drawn with its own pattern so they are easy to tell apart on the black-and-white screen.

Point at a block and the whole group of matching blocks connected to it lights up. Remove it, and everything above falls into the gap; empty columns close up from the side. A group must have at least two blocks, and bigger groups are worth far more: the points grow with the square of the group size. The game ends when no group is left, and clearing every single block adds a bonus of 1,000 points.

The menu lets you undo your last move, and the game keeps your ten best scores. Clear a board completely, or play for an hour, and a pattern editor appears on the title screen so you can redraw the blocks yourself.

Playing it here

This is a homebrew game made for the Arduboy, the open, credit-card-sized handheld with a tiny black-and-white screen: a new game by an independent developer, not a commercial release. It runs here in Ardens, an Arduboy emulator. Click Play now and use the menu on the title screen.

The game remembers its records in the emulated memory of the Arduboy, and that is kept in this browser automatically. F2 also saves the complete state of the game at any moment, and F4 brings it back. A gamepad works too.

Controls

Key Arduboy button Action
Arrow keys D-pad move the cursor
X B remove the highlighted group; choose in menus
Z A menu (continue, undo last move, restart, title)
F2 / F4 — save / load the state

A few things worth knowing

Grow groups before you pop them. A group of ten is worth 64 points; five groups of two are worth nothing. Remove other blocks first so that a colour can fall together into one big group.

Keep an eye on the columns. When a column empties, the board shifts sideways and new neighbours meet. That is often how the biggest groups form.

Undo is there for a reason. If a removal ruins a big group you were building, open the menu and take it back.
