About the game

Space Invectors is a small shooter built on a grid. A row of alien ships in three colours appears at the top, and the ships drift sideways, creep toward the ground and fire lasers at random; clear the row and the next one spawns. You slide along the bottom with a cannon. The twist that keeps it tense is that every alien you take down makes the rest of the fleet a little faster, so the first kills are easy and the last ones are a sprint. You start with five lives. When one of them takes your last life, or any alien reaches the ground, the game is over.

Camelia Lavender made the game as a way to learn JavaScript and to practise drawing in Inkscape, and it shows in the best way: the ships, shots and explosion are all her own vector drawings, and the whole thing is plain JavaScript, HTML and CSS with no libraries and no sound.

Playing it here

Click Play, then click once inside the game so it receives the keyboard. The intro screen has a short briefing; press OK to begin. The side panel shows your lives, shield, shots fired, kills and the current speed of the fleet, as a multiple of the starting speed. After losing a life you get a short shield. When the game ends, a summary shows your score, and the Close button starts again.

A few things worth knowing

Accuracy counts. The final score rewards finishing with lives left, hitting what you shoot (up to 20 points for a perfect record) and killing aliens quickly. Spraying shots at the whole fleet costs you points.

Do not wait. The fleet speeds up with every kill and the clock never stops, so the safest time to clear the low rows is at the start.

Use the shield. After a hit you are protected for a few moments: it is the best time to step forward.

Credits and licence

Space Invectors was written and drawn by Camelia Lavender and is released under the GNU Affero General Public License, version 3 or later. The five small icons in the player panel are Font Awesome Free icons (CC BY 4.0). Two small changes were made for this site: the "Source" button on the first screen was removed so the page never leaves the site, and the arena shrinks to fit smaller windows.
