About the game

Spectrum Sprites is a turn-based artillery game in the tradition of the classic worm-against-worm shooters. Two teams of three creatures stand on a rainbow island and take turns firing at each other. Every shot bites a chunk out of the ground, and under the island runs a network of caves, so a battle can be won from above, from below or from the middle of a crater.

The six Sprites are elemental and each has its own signature attack: Ember, Tide, Grove, Volt, Moon and Solar. Beyond that attack you can pick from a case of twelve weapons, such as rockets, bouncing orbs, cluster shots, homing seekers, a rain of falling stars, a shove, a rope for swinging across gaps and a blink to jump to another spot. Ammo is limited for each team and is topped up by crates that fall onto the island.

Nothing about the field stays still. The wind changes every turn and bends your shots, the water at the bottom rises as the rounds go by, and at round four a sea unicorn wakes up, annoyed, and starts to take part in the fight. The game shows a dotted line for where your shot will go, so what you have to learn is how the wind and the ground change it.

jacktheclown91 made Spectrum Sprites for js13kGames 2026, where the whole game, zipped, had to fit in 13 kilobytes. The island, the creatures and the music are all produced by code while you play.

Playing it here

Click Play, click inside the game and choose Local Battle, for two people sharing one keyboard and mouse and taking turns, or VS Computer, where the computer plays the second team. The author's version also has online play through a server run by js13kGames; that part is not included here, because it needs a connection to another site. Nothing is saved between visits.

A few things worth knowing

Watch the clock and the wind. You have thirty seconds a turn and the wind changes every time, so look at the arrow in the corner before you aim.

Dig your way in. Explosions cut holes in the ground, and a hole can open a way to the caves or take away the ground under an enemy.

Grab crates. They refill the team's ammo, which is limited, so a crate can be worth a detour.
