About the game

Spider is the solitaire for people who like to think a few moves ahead. Two decks' worth of cards are dealt into ten columns, with only the top card of each one face up. The goal is to build eight complete runs, each going from King down to Ace, and every finished run leaves the table by itself and lands in one of the eight slots at the top of the screen.

This version plays the one-suit game, in which every card is a spade. It is the gentle way into Spider: any card can sit on the next higher rank, and a run of cards in order can be moved together as one. When you run out of useful moves, the stock holds five more rows of ten cards, and dealing one puts a card on every column at once. Be careful: you can only deal when no column is empty.

The game was made by Lee Kelly with React and draws every card with CSS, so there are no image files at all. It keeps a score that goes down a little with every move and hint, a timer, statistics for your best results, and it remembers the game in progress the next time you open the page.

Playing it here

Click Play. The ten columns are at the bottom, the eight run slots at the top, and the stock is the pile of card backs at the top right. Click a face-up card to select it together with everything below it, then click the column where it should go, and the game only accepts the move if the cards are in order. Moving a card onto an empty column is always allowed. Double-click the stock to deal a new row.

A few things worth knowing

Uncover the hidden cards first. A column with many face-down cards is where the game is decided. Empty a short column early, because an empty column is the most useful thing on the table.

Keep your runs tidy. A long run of consecutive cards can travel as one piece, so build in order whenever you have the choice instead of just stacking any card on a higher one.

Deal last. The stock buries every column under a new card, so look for every move you can make first. You can undo a deal if you regret it.
