About the game
SPLIT is a short adventure for the original Game Boy, in the black-and-white palette of the screen, with a title in big square letters. You wake up in your bedroom and say "Ugh. Morning." But the morning is not quite normal: your little sister is looking for her teddy bear and says she saw Mommy and Daddy hiding something in the kitchen, the doors are locked, and overheard voices talk about "treatment for his condition".
The game plays like a small top-down story adventure. You walk through the rooms of the house (the bedrooms, the hallway, the bathroom, the kitchen, the living room), talk to your family, pick up a key and other things, and make the choices that move the story along, including whether to take a cookie without asking. The mood is calm and eerie rather than scary, with a dream-like logic, and the whole game is short.
SPLIT was made by Tim Samoff in GB Studio for itch.io's Mini Game Jam 30 + GB Studio in 2019, where it took second place. The author drew the backgrounds and sprites in Photoshop and wrote the music in MilkyTracker.
Playing it here
This is a homebrew game made for the original Game Boy: a new game by an independent developer, not a commercial release. It runs here in binjgb, a Game Boy emulator compiled to WebAssembly. Click Play now, click the game once so the page has the keyboard, and press Enter on the title screen.
F2 saves the current state of the emulator and F4 brings it back. A gamepad also works.

A few things worth knowing
Talk to everybody. Each person has something to say, and some of what they say tells you where to go next.
Try every door. A locked door says so, and that is a hint that you need something from another room.
Mind your manners. Some choices come with a question; take your time over them.
