About the game
Starship Sorades 13K is an arcade shooter with a simple promise: one ship, endless waves of enemies, and a score that tells you how long you lasted. You fly up a glowing grid, enemies drift down from the top of the screen and fill the space with torpedoes, and you answer with a steady stream of shots. Clear a wave and the next one arrives, a little harder than the last. The question the game asks on its title screen is whether you can survive 13 of them.
Destroyed enemies leave pickups behind. A + upgrades your gun, step by step from a single shot to a spread that covers several directions at once. E restores energy, S loads a protective shield, and B is a bomb that damages every enemy on screen and wipes out the torpedoes around you. Getting hit costs energy and, once you are well armed, some of your firepower, so dodging matters as much as shooting. When the energy bar runs dry, the game is over.
Thiemo Mättig made it for the first js13kGames competition, in 2012, in which the entire game has to fit in 13 kilobytes. The author lists Raptor: Call of the Shadows and Warning Forever as its models. The sound effects, by Sven Gramatke, are generated on the fly with a version of the sfxr synthesiser, and the ships are drawn by code and pre-rendered when the page loads.
Playing it here
These are the files from the author's repository, unchanged: the page, the game script and the small sound library, readable source code with no build step. Click Play and the first wave starts after the title.
When your energy runs out the game shows GAME OVER and stops; to play again, reload the page. There is no save and no high-score table.
Pressing M is a little easter egg the author left in: it replaces your ship with the model from his earlier, full-size game Starship Sorades.

A few things worth knowing
Keep firing. Holding the fire key costs nothing, so leave it down and concentrate on moving.
Grab every +. The spread shot makes the later waves far easier, and you lose part of it when you are hit, so collect upgrades whenever you can.
Bombs go off at once. A B pickup explodes as soon as you collect it, damaging every enemy and clearing away the torpedoes, so it is most useful when the screen is crowded.
Use the whole width. Enemy fire is aimed at you, so keep moving from side to side instead of waiting in one spot.
