About the game
Street Racer is about speed and traffic. You drive along a road with several lanes, seen from above, with cars and trucks coming at you as the road scrolls by, and every second you stay fast and stay clear of them adds to your score. The higher the lane you take, the more points you earn, and the faster you drive, the more you earn; if you stop, your points go down, and a crash costs a thousand of them.
There are four ways to race: a 30-second dash, a 60-second race, a 180-second race and a race with no time limit in which you have three lives. Each of the three difficulty levels, easy, medium and hard, has ten levels plus a random extra one, and the menu lets you pick your race, your level and your car from a gallery of vehicles that includes hatchbacks, sports cars and trucks.
The game is by marggines, who made it in early 2023 for the Arduboy.
Playing it here
This is a homebrew game made for the Arduboy, the open, credit-card-sized handheld with a tiny black-and-white screen: a new game by an independent developer, not a commercial release. It runs here in Ardens, an Arduboy emulator. Click Play now and wait: the title screen shows a few attract animations and then shows PRESS A TO START; press Z, choose the race with Left and Right, the level with Up and Down, press Z again to choose a car and once more to start.
The game shows a high score during a session but does not save it; F2 saves the complete state of the emulated console at any moment, and F4 brings it back. A gamepad works too.
Controls
| Key | Arduboy button | Action |
|---|---|---|
| Z | A | speed up (0 to 5) |
| X | B | slow down |
| Left / right | D-pad | move the car sideways |
| Up / down | D-pad | change lane (higher lanes score more) |
| Z + X | A + B | quit to the menu |
| F2 / F4 | — | save / load the state |
A few things worth knowing
Speed is points. Staying at a low speed costs you points, and on the lowest lane it costs you even more, so you are rewarded for being brave.
Use the top lanes. Higher lanes score more, but have more traffic; move up when the road ahead looks clear.
A crash costs a lot. A thousand points is a big loss, so slow down for a moment rather than taking a gap that is too small.
