About the game
Sugoroku is the Japanese name for backgammon, and this table plays backgammon and its relatives. Besides the classic game it has a pure Race, the reversed Anti game, Nackgammon (a different starting position), Long Gammon, the quick Hypergammon with three checkers a side, and Tabula, the ancient Roman ancestor of the game.
You can play a single game or a match to 3, 5, 7 or 9 points, or for money points. The doubling cube is there, with the options experienced players argue about: gammons and backgammons that count extra, the Jacoby rule and beavers can each be switched on or off. The computer opponent plays at four strengths, from random moves up to a careful, strong player, so it suits a beginner as well as a regular.
Playing it here
Click Play and pick the game from the first row, then choose whether you are White, Black, play a friend on the same screen, or watch the computer play itself. "Roll to start" decides who moves first; after that, press Roll dice on your turn, click a checker (the points it can reach light up) and click the destination, or drag it. Undo takes back a move before you end the turn, and Double offers the cube when you think you are ahead. Under the board you can set the match length, the cube and the computer strength, and change the cloth, checkers and numbers. Nothing is sent anywhere: the record of each game is kept as text on the page.

A few things worth knowing
Start with a single game. Turn the cube off and play one game at a time until the moves feel natural.
Try Hypergammon. With three checkers a side the game is short and teaches the cube quickly.
Raise the computer slowly. Random and Greedy are gentle; Strong will punish loose play.
Questions
Do the rules follow standard backgammon? Yes: the classic game is standard backgammon, and the extra rules (gammons, Jacoby, beavers) can each be switched on or off.
Is there an online mode? No. You can play the computer, a friend on the same screen, or watch two computers.
