About the game

Tanks of Freedom is a turn-based strategy game about two armies on a tile map. Each side has infantry, tanks, helicopters and other units, plus buildings you can capture, and every turn you spend action points to move, attack and buy new units. The game is drawn in isometric pixel art with a limited palette of 32 colours, and it has the kind of clear, readable rules that make a match easy to learn and long enough to need real planning.

You can play a campaign against the computer, set up a skirmish on one of the included maps, and play hot-seat against a friend on the same screen. There is also a map editor, the workshop, where you can draw your own battlefield and play it. The soundtrack and the sound effects were made for the game, with synthesizers and a classic handheld console.

The missions have a political backdrop (the first one is a revolt against a corrupt government). The fighting is shown with small stylised sprites and no gore.

Playing it here

Click Play and wait while the game loads (about 26 MB, downloaded only when you press the button). Click inside the game once so that it receives input, then click the start screen to open the menu. Choose Campaign for the missions, or Skirmish for a free match. Your progress and the maps you create are stored in this browser. The online maps and multiplayer of the original game depend on a server that is not part of this version, so they are turned off here.

Tips

Capture buildings. They give you income and the place to buy new units.

Know the matchups. The game itself reminds you that some units are strong against others, for example tanks against helicopters on the ground.

Watch your action points. Each action costs points, so plan the whole turn before you start moving.
