About the game

Tanky McTankface is a small tank that has to go as far to the right as it can, across hills and valleys, while enemy turrets shoot at it from the ground. You steer along the terrain, tilt the gun up or down and hold the fire button to charge a shot, so the longer you hold, the farther the shell flies. The turrets are not all the same: some shoot in a high arc, some fire straight, and their aim gets worse the farther the run goes.

The idea that makes it special is how the upgrades work. Along the way you collect parts, but they are not applied at once. When your tank finally breaks down, the game uses the parts to build a better version, which starts again from the beginning with more health, a stronger shot and the like. So dying is not the end of the run, it is the shop. The score counter and the highscore at the top of the screen show how far you have got.

Frederik Petersen made Tanky McTankface for js13kGames 2019, and the whole game, including its music, had to fit in 13 KB. It plays best on a wide screen, and the game scales itself to the window.

Playing it here

Click Play and then press Start in the game menu. The opening message explains the controls. Drive right, aim and charge shots at the turrets, and pick up the items they leave behind. When you are destroyed the menu returns: press Start to continue with your new upgrades, or Fresh Start to throw them away. The sliders in the menu set the volume of the music and the sound effects. Your highscore is kept in your browser.

Controls

Key Action
Left / Right arrows drive
Up / Down arrows raise / lower the gun
Space (hold) charge a shot; release to fire
Esc menu: audio, continue, fresh start

A few things worth knowing

Charge, do not tap. A full charge reaches much farther than a quick tap, and most turrets are out of reach for the short shots.

Pick up everything. Items only count after you break, so grab them even when the turret next to them is dangerous.

Death is progress. A short, bad run still brings your upgrades, so do not be afraid to dive in.
