About the game

A meteor crashed into a zoo in the night, and an alien virus spread through its residents, turning them into robot hybrids called Technoids. The zoo is under quarantine, and inside it is a fight for survival. You are the Techno Monkey, with a newly acquired buster on your arm, and you must stop the six other Technoids running wild.

The game is built around a map of the zoo. The map shows the six bosses, a bear, an elephant, a hippo, a lion, a vulture and the zookeeper, each in its own enclosure, and you pick whichever you want to take on first. Each fight is a one-on-one duel in a side view, in which you run, jump and shoot while the boss attacks with its own patterns. The order is up to you, so you can start with the one whose attacks you find easiest, and learn the others as you go.

Zachariah Falgout, who goes by RetrobitCoder, programmed it and drew the art himself, in 2017, for the Arduboy.

Playing it here

This is a homebrew game made for the Arduboy, the open, credit-card-sized handheld with a tiny black-and-white screen: a new game by an independent developer, not a commercial release. It runs here in Ardens, an Arduboy emulator. Click Play now, press Z on the title screen and choose a boss on the map with Left and Right, then X.

The game keeps no records, but F2 saves the complete state of the emulated console at any moment and F4 brings it back, which is handy mid-fight. A gamepad works too.

Controls

Key Arduboy button Action
Left / right D-pad move; choose a boss on the map
X B jump; enter the fight on the map
Z A shoot; start from the title screen
Down D-pad pause and resume
F2 / F4 — save / load the state

A few things worth knowing

Learn one boss at a time. Each boss attacks in a pattern, and watching a few rounds before you shoot makes the fight much easier.

Keep moving. Standing still is how you get hit; jump the shots and shoot while landing.

Use the pause. Down stops the game, which is handy for a break or a deep breath before a tough part.
