About the game
The Waffle is a platform puzzle set inside a grid of square rooms, like the squares of a waffle, drawn in a dark, hand-written style. You wake up in a room with a note on the wall, "12 Sept, find way out", and the only exits are doors that lead to other rooms. Some doors are open, some are blocked, and some lead to a missing room, shown as a 404, where there is nothing at all.
The trick is that the rooms can move. Switches on the walls are wired to other rooms, and flipping one can turn a laser on or off, or send a room sliding into an empty slot in the grid, opening a path that was not there a second ago. Moving the wrong room can be just as deadly: a room that slides into the one you are standing in crushes you, lasers fry you, and some corridors end in an abyss. Short messages scrawled on the walls ("lost 404", "long way down") hint at where you are.
Tero Jäntti and Sami Heikkinen made The Waffle for js13kGames 2020, whose theme was 404, and the whole game, with its music and sound effects, fits in 13 KB.
Playing it here
Click Play, then press Enter on the title screen. The game is played with the keyboard only, so it is best on a computer. Walk to a switch, press Space, and watch what moves before you take another step. When you fall, get fried or get crushed, press Enter to try again. Nothing is saved between visits.

A few things worth knowing
Follow the wires. A switch is connected to another room by a wire drawn on the wall. Look at where the wire goes before you flip it.
Look before you flip. A laser crossing a room kills in an instant, and a switch can turn one on as easily as off. Check the room it is wired to before you press Space, then cross only when the beam is gone.
Mind the sliding rooms. A room that is moving can crush you if you are standing in the room it is moving into. Stay out of the way, then walk in once it stops.
