About the game
Tower of Purgatory is a tower builder in which you never lift a sword yourself. You are the owner of a tower, your customers are a party of androgynous animal "dudes" (knights, clerics, rangers and vagabonds) and your job is to build each floor, send them up, and take your cut of what they find. The tower is drawn in a faux-3D style that you can rotate, zoom into and slice floor by floor.
Each round starts in the build phase. A list of rooms is offered on the right: combat rooms where the dudes meet enemies for gold and experience, armories that raise the level of their equipment, libraries that enchant it, wells that restore the uses of their perks, shrines that heal, treasure rooms, and nastier ones such as traps and curses. Rooms come in several sizes and cost more the higher the floor. You choose which rooms to place on which slice of the floor, hire more dudes, buy loot and equip your party, then press "Adventure forth!" and watch it all play out. Every third floor is a boss floor, and the party fights it together, so a tank in the group matters.
The catch is in the name: you only collect gold and equipment from a dude if they survive the whole tower. Choose a short, medium or long tower, or an endless one to see how long you can last. There is also a simulation mode, almost hands-off, in which the dudes never die and never escape. The music changes with the rooms you place, and the little messages that scroll along the bottom of the screen keep a running, tongue-in-cheek log of what is happening to your adventurers.
Playing it here
Click Play, wait for the download (the game is about 9 MB and loads once) and click inside the game so it gets the mouse and keyboard. Your progress is not saved, and a run takes a few minutes for the short tower. The game draws the tower with many layers of stacked images, so it asks a lot of an older computer; if it runs slowly, switch to the story or room camera (keys 2 and 3).
Controls
| Input | Action |
|---|---|
| Mouse | click the room list, the tower slices and the buttons |
| Q and E, or left and right arrows | rotate the tower |
| W and S, or up and down arrows | go up or down a floor |
| 1, 2, 3 | camera on the whole tower, on one floor, on one room |
| Z and X | zoom in and out |
| Esc | close the room card |
A few things worth knowing
Read the tips. The hints along the top of the screen explain the stats: strength raises damage, defense lowers damage taken, wisdom increases healing, agility raises speed and critical chance, luck improves loot.
Bring a tank. Bosses always go for the dude with the most confidence and each hit lowers it, so keep knights in the party.
Mind your gold. Hiring is permanent and gets more expensive the more dudes you have, and empty rooms on a floor leave your party with less to do. The game asks you to confirm before it lets you set off with rooms unbuilt.
Autoplay. The button in the top-right corner lets the game build, hire and equip for you if you only want to watch.
