About the game

Truck Simul8or is not quite the simulator its name promises. The truck is a small kid running along a country road, pretending very hard to be one. Behind him a landscape of hills, houses, a church and trees scrolls past, and every so often a real car comes down the road from the left or the right.

The road has two lanes, and that is the whole game: stay out of the car's lane. A counter in the top right corner goes up for every moment you survive. If the car catches you, the screen dissolves into a "CRASH!" message with your final count, and it is back to the title for another run.

Before you set off, the Customize menu lets you dress up your truck. Two options repaint its wheels, and a third switches on a honk, which makes a "HONK" bubble pop up above the kid as he runs.

Playing it here

Truck Simul8or is a CHIP-8 program. CHIP-8 is a simple virtual machine from 1977, created for hobby computers like the COSMAC VIP, and people still write new games for it. This one targets XO-CHIP, a modern extension with extra colours, more memory and better sound. It runs here in the Octo emulator, with the speed and colours chosen for it in the archive.

Click Play, then use W and S to choose DRIVE! or CUSTOMIZE on the title screen and E (or Space) to confirm. F2 saves the state of the emulator at any moment and F4 brings it back. A gamepad works too: the D-pad moves the cursor and changes lanes, and the A button confirms.

Controls

Key Action
W or up arrow / S or down arrow move the cursor on the menus
E or Space pick the highlighted option
W or up arrow (driving) move to the far lane
S or down arrow (driving) move to the near lane
any key, twice (after a crash) back to the title screen
F2 / F4 save / load the state

A few things worth knowing

One car at a time. Only one car is ever on the road. Watch which lane it is in as it enters, and you have plenty of time to step across.

You only need a tap. The kid stays in whichever lane you last chose, so there is no need to hold the key down.

Rims and honk are for show. The Customize options change how the truck looks, not how it plays. Choose BACK at the bottom of that menu to return to the title.
