About the game
Turnover '77 hands you a car that will not stop turning. It sits on the track like the hand of a clock, rotating round and round on its own, and you cannot change that. What you can do is slide it: up, down, left and right, one step at a time, through a course of curves, narrow gaps and scattered bollards.
The job is to reach the round marker on the right side of the screen, which has an arrow and the word "goal" drawn under it. Every part of the scenery is solid, including that helpful label, so the trick is to time each move so the car is pointing along the gap, not across it, when you squeeze through.
Bumping into something sounds the buzzer and costs one of your four lives. Lose all four and the course resets, clock included. A timer runs from the moment you set off, and when you touch the goal the game shows your time next to your best one, followed by a short bonus scene before it returns to the title.
Playing it here
Turnover '77 is a CHIP-8 program. CHIP-8 is a simple virtual machine from 1977, created for hobby computers like the COSMAC VIP, and people still write new games for it. This one targets SUPER-CHIP, the later extension with a sharper 128 by 64 screen, and was made for Octojam 1, the first edition of a yearly CHIP-8 game jam. It runs here in the Octo emulator, with the speed and colours chosen for it in the archive.
Click Play. On the title screen, press W, A, S or D, then any key to drop onto the course; the car starts in the top left corner. F2 saves the state of the emulator at any moment and F4 brings it back, which is handy before a tight gap. A gamepad works too: the D-pad moves the car.
Controls
| Key | Action |
|---|---|
| W, A, S or D (title screen), then any key | start |
| W A S D or arrow keys | slide the car up, left, down, right |
| A and D (bonus scene) | steer left and right |
| any key (after the bonus scene) | back to the title |
| F2 / F4 | save / load the state |
A few things worth knowing
Watch the rotation, not just the gap. The car turns at a steady pace no matter what you do. Wait just outside a narrow spot until it lines up with the opening, then move through in one go.
Holding a key is fine. The car keeps sliding while a direction is held, so you can combine two keys to move diagonally around the bends.
Do not brush the label. The arrow and the word "goal" next to the target are part of the scenery, and touching them counts as a crash. Come at the marker from the side away from the label.
Credits and licence
Turnover '77 was created by the developer who goes by "your name here", who wrote the code and drew the course. It runs here in Octo, the CHIP-8 development tool and emulator by John Earnest (MIT licence). The game is kept in the Chip8 Community Archive, which places everything in it in the public domain under CC0 1.0. The licence text is linked from this page.
