About the game

The knight of the title has one plan: run straight down the forest road and collect every coin along it. He never slows down, so the road scrolls towards him without pause and all you choose is which of the five lanes he runs in.

Coins are worth ten points each, and trouble comes up the road with them. Pits full of spikes and orcs marching the other way have to be dodged, since nothing else stops them. Arrows shot from further down the road and bombs rolling up it can also be blocked: the knight raises his shield for a brief moment, and with good timing nothing gets through. Each hit costs one of three hearts, and the run ends when the last one is gone.

Rafael Garcia made the game with GBDK-2020 for the Game Boy Competition 2021, one of his first homebrew projects. The music is his own edit of Twilight Drive, a track by krümel from the GB Studio Community Assets.

Playing it here

This is a homebrew game made for the Game Boy: a new game by an independent developer, not a commercial release. It runs here in binjgb, a Game Boy emulator compiled to WebAssembly, in its Game Boy Color version. Click Play now and press Enter on the title screen.

There is no high score table, so the run lasts as long as you do. F2 saves the current state of the emulator in this browser and F4 brings it back. A gamepad works too.

Controls

Key Game Boy button Action
Left / right arrows Control Pad move one lane left or right
Z B raise the shield for a moment
Enter Start start; pause and resume; play again after a game over
X A start from the title screen
F2 / F4 — save / load the emulator state

A few things worth knowing

One button at a time. The game reads a single button per moment, so the shield only goes up while no arrow is held. Let go of the direction, then press Z.

Know what the shield stops. It blocks arrows, and bombs if you raise it just as one reaches you. Pits and orcs have to be avoided by changing lanes.

Tap, do not hold. Holding an arrow keeps the knight sliding across lanes until he reaches the edge of the road. Short taps place him exactly. The same goes for pausing: a quick press of Enter pauses, while holding it down lets the game carry on.

Watch the bottom of the screen. Everything enters from below, so there is a moment to read the next row before it reaches the knight.
