About the game
VIRUS LQP-79 is a top-down shooter about one woman with a gun and far too many zombies. Each level is a walled yard, several screens wide, seen from above. Somewhere in it are a few survivors waiting to be picked up, and the undead keep shuffling in from every side.
Walk into a survivor to rescue them. When the last one is safe, an exit door opens somewhere on the map and a timer starts: the time left when you walk through becomes bonus points, and once it runs out you start losing health until you get there. Zombies that fall sometimes leave a coin or a heart behind, and hearts restore your health.
Your gun never runs out of bullets, but it does run hot. Keep the trigger down too long and it overheats, leaving you defenceless until it cools, so short bursts work better than holding fire. There are 32 maps, each visited four times, for 128 levels in all; beat the last one and the game is won.
Playing it here
This is a homebrew game made for the Arduboy, the open, credit-card-sized handheld with a tiny black-and-white screen: a new game by independent developers, not a commercial release. It runs here in Ardens, an Arduboy emulator. Click Play now, choose PLAY on the title menu and then NEW. CONT picks up from the last level you reached, and HELL starts the mayhem mode: the maps come in random order, zombies arrive four times as fast, nothing is saved and the game only ends when you fall.
The normal game saves your level, score and health at the start of each level in the emulated memory of the Arduboy, which is kept in this browser automatically. F2 also saves the complete state at any moment, and F4 brings it back. A gamepad works too. The HELP screen is empty in this build (it used to show a QR code pointing to the team's old website), so the controls are below.
Controls
| Key | Arduboy button | Action |
|---|---|---|
| Arrow keys | D-pad | walk in eight directions |
| Hold X | B | shoot in the direction you walk |
| Hold Z | A | shoot while keeping your aim (strafe) |
| Z + X | A + B | pause |
| F2 / F4 | — | save / load the state |
A few things worth knowing
Strafe to retreat. Holding Z locks the direction you face, so you can walk backwards away from a crowd and keep shooting at it.
Mind the heat. The heat gauge fills while you shoot. Let go for a moment before it tops out, or you'll stand there with a dead gun.
Zombies block the way. You can't walk through them, so don't let yourself be cornered against a wall.
The door won't wait. Once the exit opens, its timer keeps running, and after zero it costs you health; save the survivor nearest the door for last.
