About the game

WDL is a small word-guessing game. The computer picks a secret English word of three letters, and you have five tries to find it. Type a guess on the on-screen keyboard and confirm it; the game then marks each letter.

A letter in the right place is shown in reverse on a filled box, a letter that is in the word but somewhere else gets a dashed underline, and a letter that isn't in the word loses its underline and disappears from the keyboard. Letters you have placed correctly are also highlighted on the keyboard. Guesses must be real words from the game's list of about five hundred; anything else just gets a buzz.

Playing it here

This is a CHIP-8 program. CHIP-8 is a small virtual machine from 1977, created for hobby computers like the COSMAC VIP, and people still write new games for it today. WDL uses only the original CHIP-8 instructions and was written to run on a real COSMAC VIP. It was made for Octojam 9, a yearly CHIP-8 game jam, and runs here in the Octo emulator.

Click Play and press Space to start. F2 saves the state of the emulator at any moment and F4 brings it back. A gamepad works too: the D-pad moves the cursor, A types and B deletes.

Controls

Key Action
W A S D or arrow keys move the cursor on the keyboard
E or Space type the selected letter; on the delete key (bottom left), delete; on the check mark, confirm the guess; start the game
Q delete the last letter
any key start a new word after a win or a loss
F2 / F4 save / load the state

A few things worth knowing

Confirm with the check mark. The key with a tick in the bottom right corner of the keyboard submits your guess, once all three letters are in. The one on the left, with a cross, deletes.

Use your early guesses to explore. With only three letters, a first guess that tries two common vowels or consonants rules out a lot of the keyboard at once.

Missing letters vanish. Letters that aren't in the word are removed from the keyboard, and the cursor can't type them again, so what is left shows your remaining options.

Credits and licence

WDL was created by John Earnest, who also wrote the Octo toolchain and emulator and maintains the Chip8 Community Archive. The game is in the public domain under CC0 1.0, like everything in that archive, and the Octo emulator is released under the MIT licence. The licence text is linked from this page.
