About the game

You are xx142-b2.exe, a small weaponised program sent into an alien computer network to switch off its defences. The trouble is the antivirus: thirteen seconds after you appear it finds you and deletes you, and the counter in the corner never lets you forget it.

Deletion is not the end, though. When a run ends you start again from the entrance, and every earlier run starts with you, as a ghost that repeats exactly the path you took. Ghosts are not just a memory: they press the switches they walk over, just as you do, and most switches only hold their door open while someone is standing on them. The puzzle is to plan runs that work together, one copy holding a door open so that a later copy can slip through, until one of you reaches the exit inside its thirteen seconds.

The levels are 3D rooms seen from above, built from glowing hexagonal floors and walls, and there are eight of them, from a gentle introduction to layouts where several ghosts have to cooperate in the right order. Ben Clark and Salvatore Previti made the game for js13kGames 2019, whose theme was "Back", and it won first place in both the overall and the desktop rankings.

Playing it here

This is the original competition version, unchanged. Click Play, press any key to get past the intro text, and the first level starts. The game needs WebGL, which every current browser has. Nothing is saved between visits, so a new session starts from the first level.

A few things worth knowing

Plan the ghosts first. A run that only stands on a switch for thirteen seconds is often the most useful thing you can do. Think about which doors must be open, and in what order, before you go for the exit.

Backspace is your friend. If a run went wrong, there is no need to wait for the antivirus: end it at once. Bear in mind that the ghost of that run will still replay what you did.

Ghosts vanish too. A ghost's run lasts only as long as yours did, so a door it was holding open closes again once its time is up.
