About the game

3D Fighter is a one-on-one fighting game in the spirit of the classics of the genre, played in full 3D with a camera that orbits and dollies in on every big hit. There are eight fighters, each with a different style and a computer personality of their own: a zoner who throws fireballs, a fast rushdown fighter, a heavy puncher, a grappler with an unblockable throw, a Tae Kwon Do kicker, a street brawler who powers up, a Wing Chun fighter who catches strikes and throws the attacker, and an armoured knight whose heaviest moves shrug off a hit.

Fights happen in eight stages, from a boxing ring and a dojo to a rooftop in the rain, a beach, a night market, the roof of a speeding train and a courtyard where the sun rises round by round. Each stage has its own music and ambient sounds. There are high, mid and low blocks, throws, counter hits, combos, a super meter with a cinematic finisher, and sidesteps.

Modes

  • Vs CPU: pick a fighter and a stage and fight the computer. The easiest way to start.
  • Arcade: a ladder of fights with a score, ending with a shadow boss.
  • Versus: two players on the same keyboard or with two gamepads.
  • Training: a dummy that stands, blocks, follows the computer's logic or replays your recorded inputs, with the frame data of every move on screen.
  • Demo: two computer fighters play each other.
  • Replays: finished matches are saved in your browser and can be watched again with pause, frame step and slow motion.

The online mode of the original game (internet lobby, join by address) is not part of this version.

Playing it here

Click Play and wait while the game loads. It is a large download, about 135 MB the first time (the browser keeps it for next time), and it needs a computer with a decent graphics card: it is a real 3D game running in the browser. Press Enter on Vs CPU, pick a fighter, then a stage, and fight. If the picture stutters, try a smaller browser window.

Controls

Key Action
W A S D move, jump (W) and crouch (S)
U / I light / heavy punch
J / K light / heavy kick
L sidestep
Esc pause and move list
Enter confirm in the menus

Special moves use motion inputs: for example down, down-forward, forward plus a punch button throws a fireball for Kenji. Fill the super meter and enter the motion twice plus a button for the super. The pause menu lists the moves of your fighter. Player 2 uses the arrow keys, numpad 4 and 5 for the punches, 1 and 2 for the kicks and 6 to sidestep. Every key can be changed in Options, Controls.

Tips

Block low and high. Some moves hit low and some hit high; hold back to block standing and back plus down to block crouching.

Learn one special first. Each fighter has two or three motion inputs. Pick one fighter in Training and repeat a single special until it comes out every time.

Watch the meter. A full super meter ends rounds, and fighters get meter when they hit and when they are hit.
