About the game

404kph is a racing game painted in the colours of a synthwave poster: a huge striped sun, a purple grid stretching to the horizon, and a car drawn only as glowing green outlines. The tracks are ribbons of blue neon rolling through the grid, and you race them against the clock.

Each of the eight tracks is short and unforgiving. The car is fast and slippery, so you steer with the arrow keys and use Space to drift through the bends. Red gates mark four checkpoints that turn green once you cross them, and some pads on the road speed you up while others slow you down. When you finish, the game keeps your best time for that track and, the next time you start it, shows a ghost of that run that you can follow with G. Beating your own ghost, a few hundredths at a time, is the whole game.

Jeremy Burns made 404kph for js13kGames 2020, where the whole game, zipped, had to fit in 13 kilobytes. Everything, from the music to the shaders that draw the track and the car, is computed by code.

Playing it here

Click Play, wait for the loading bar to fill, then click the game once to start (the music begins at this point). Press Enter at the title screen to pick a track, and Enter again to race. Your best times are saved in this browser, and so are your ghosts. When a run ends you can export your ghost to the clipboard, and paste a ghost from someone else on the track list to race against it.

Controls

Key Action
Arrow keys accelerate, brake and steer
Space drift
R restart the lap
G follow the ghost of your best run
Esc quit to the track list
Enter confirm in the menus

A few things worth knowing

Drift early. Press Space as you enter a bend, and let go as you come out of it.

Take every checkpoint. A run only counts when you have crossed all four gates, so cutting a corner and missing one costs you the lap.

Watch the road pads. Yellow pads give a boost and red ones slow you down, so line the car up for the first and avoid the second.

Credits and licence

404kph was created by Jeremy Burns and released under the MIT licence. The licence text is linked from this page, and the source code is on GitHub and in the js13kGames repository. The only change in this version is a simpler screen filter (scanlines and a vignette), which replaces a CRT effect adapted from a shader whose licence did not allow redistribution.
