About the game

You play a scientist in a lab with a machine that reads DNA. In each level you walk and jump through a small cave-like room, scan the creatures you meet and carry what you learn back to a synthesizer. There you pick heads, bodies and other parts and build a creature that can get past the obstacle in your way. The art is detailed for a Game Boy, with shaded backgrounds and dithering, and the music changes between the title, the levels and the scanning.

The author made it in a week for two game jams, and says it was the first time she wrote anything in C, so it is a short game with a few rough edges. It ends with a thank-you screen.

Playing it here

This is a homebrew game made for the Game Boy: a new game by an independent developer, not a commercial release. It runs here in binjgb, a Game Boy emulator compiled to WebAssembly. Click Play now and press Enter on the title screen. F2 saves the emulator state in this browser and F4 brings it back.

Controls

Key Game Boy button Action
Left / Right arrows Control Pad walk; move in the synthesizer
Up / Down arrows Control Pad move in the synthesizer

A few things worth knowing

Jump and walk together. A few of the ledges are only just reachable, so hold a direction as you jump.

Scan everything. The parts you collect decide what the synthesizer can build.

It does not reset itself. After the final screen, use the browser's reload to play again.
