About the game
Aevilia is a role-playing game made for the Game Boy Color by ISSOtm (Eldred Habert) and a small team of friends. It is written entirely in the console's own assembly language, and it shows how much of a classic handheld adventure fits in a 128 KB cartridge: a title with a bit of attitude, a character select, save files, a dialogue system with portraits, tile-based maps for a town, its houses and the forest around it, and a battle system.
The game has a sense of humour about itself. Aevilia, the voice that greets you, asks whether it is your first time playing, explains which buttons confirm and cancel, and wants to know whether you are a boy or a girl before a single step is taken. The tutorial that follows keeps talking to you about pressing buttons and not interacting enough, so do not rush the first few minutes.
Be aware that it is unfinished. The authors say the codebase is no longer being updated, because a rewrite is under way, so what you get here is a slice of an ambitious project rather than a complete adventure. Much of the charm is in seeing how far they got.
Playing it here
This is a homebrew game made for the Game Boy Color: a new game by independent developers, not a commercial release. It runs here in binjgb, a Game Boy emulator compiled to WebAssembly, in its Game Boy Color mode, and it needs that mode: it does not run on the original monochrome Game Boy. Click Play, wait for the title and press X to read through each message.
The cartridge has battery-backed save files, kept in this browser. F2 also saves the emulator state and F4 brings it back. A gamepad works too.
This build does not play the game's few door and knock sound effects, for the reason explained in the credits below. The music is unaffected.

A few things worth knowing
Read the messages. The opening is a talking tutorial; press X to advance and do what it asks, otherwise it nags.
Interact with everything. Signs, furniture and people have something to say, and some of it is funny.
Expect rough edges. It is a work in progress, and the authors' own notes describe it as such.
Credits and licence
Most of the programming is by ISSOtm; most of the graphics are by Kai; the soundtrack is by DevEd; the maps were made by Parzival and FrostedGeulleisia. The game is released under the Apache License 2.0 (copyright the Aevilia Dev Team), and the sound engine is DevSound by DevEd and Pigu, under the MIT licence. This site serves a build we compiled ourselves from the authors' source with the RGBDS 0.3.7 toolchain in release mode, and without FX Hammer, the small sound-effect player by Aleksi Eeben that the game uses for its door and knock sounds: we could not find terms that allow redistributing it, so a patch replaces it with silent stubs. The source, DevSound, the patch and the build script are hosted alongside the game, and the licence texts are linked from this page.
