About the game

You play a tiny figure on a dark arena with a glowing blue ring in the middle, and a short line that keeps turning around you, like the beam of a lighthouse. Red enemies drift in from the edges, heading for the ring. If one touches the ring, or touches you, the game is over.

You never aim directly. You press the button to mark where an arc starts, wait while the line keeps rotating, and release to mark where it ends. The game then fires a wave outward along that arc, and your fighter hops toward the middle of it. A narrow arc shoots far and a wide arc covers more ground, so every shot is a small decision between reach and coverage. Only one wave can be in the air at a time. Each enemy you catch in the same press is worth more than the one before it, so the big scores come from waves that sweep a whole group.

Arcfire is one of the one-button mini-games that Kenta Cho, who works as ABA Games, makes with his crisp-game-lib library. There are no image or sound files: the graphics are drawn by the code, and the sound effects and music are generated while you play.

Playing it here

Click Play, then click, tap or press Space inside the game to start. The game uses a glowing, scanline look, which is part of the original design. Nothing is installed or sent anywhere. The best score at the top right is only remembered while the page stays open.

Controls

Input Action
Hold (mouse, touch or Space) mark the start of the arc
Release fire the arc and hop toward its middle

A few things worth knowing

Shoot narrow when they are far. A thin arc reaches much farther than a wide one.

Mind the hop. The fighter jumps toward the middle of the arc, so a shot can also be a way to dodge.

Guard the ring. An enemy that touches the ring ends the run just like one that touches you, so clear the ones heading for it first.
