About the game

A small figure runs back and forth along a purple strip of ground. Shoots of bamboo pop up here and there and grow taller as the seconds pass, going from pale yellow to yellow and then, once they are tall, to green. You cut the young ones by running into them: a shoot that is still tiny is worth nothing, and from there the points go up with the square of its height, with the best value just as it turns bright yellow.

Wait too long and the bamboo turns hard. Running into a tall green stalk does not cut it: it knocks the stalk down a bit, slows it, and throws you back the other way, and a stalk that is cut down to the yellow size in this way is lost with a bang. If any stalk grows all the way to the top of the screen, the game is over. So the game is a constant decision about when to turn around and when to dash, and which stalk is the most dangerous. Hold the button and you crouch and pass through everything without cutting any of it, so you can slip past a stalk or leave a young one to grow.

Bamboo is one of the one-button mini-games that Kenta Cho, who works as ABA Games, makes with his crisp-game-lib library. There are no image or sound files: the graphics are drawn by the code, and the sound effects and music are generated while you play.

Playing it here

Click Play, then click, tap or press Space inside the game to start. The game is drawn wide, so on a phone it is best played with the device turned sideways. Nothing is installed or sent anywhere. The best score at the top right is only remembered while the page stays open.

A few things worth knowing

Cut them at bright yellow. Too early is worth nothing and later is worth less, so wait for the colour to change.

Watch the tallest stalk. If one reaches the top the run is over, so go back for it first even if it means a bounce.

Hold to pass. Crouching lets you cross a stalk that you are not ready to cut.
