About the game

Binary Gunner is a vertically scrolling shoot 'em up that lasts exactly one minute. Enemy ships come at you in two colours, red and blue, flying along curved paths over a scrolling field of green neon outlines, and your ship can be either colour: one button switches it. A counter at the top left shows the seconds left and your score is shown below it.

The twist is in the scoring. Every enemy you shoot adds to a chain, and the chain multiplies the points. Shoot enemies of your own colour and the chain keeps growing; hit one of the other colour and the chain resets. So the goal is not just to survive but to keep your shots on matching targets for as long as you can, picking them out, switching colour when needed and aiming with the clock running.

Playing it here

This is a homebrew game made for the Master System: a new game by an independent developer, not a commercial release. It was made for SHMUP JAM 2, and its start-up screen shows the name of that jam for a moment before the title. It runs here in Gearsystem, a Master System emulator compiled to WebAssembly. Click Play, then press Z or X on the title screen to start the minute.

F2 saves the full state of the emulator in this browser and F4 brings it back. A gamepad works too.

Controls

Key Master System button Action
Arrow keys D-pad move the ship
Z Button 1 switch the ship colour
X Button 2 shoot (hold to keep firing)
F2 / F4 — save / load the emulator state

A few things worth knowing

Match the colour before you shoot. Your shots take the colour of your ship at the moment you fire them, so switch first and fire second.

Do not waste a long chain. One wrong hit sets it back to zero, so when two colours cross your line of fire, hold back until the right target is there.

Watch the clock. There is only a minute; a long chain near the end is worth more than a careful start.
