About the game

A red figure wakes up in front of a blood-stained altar that is hungry. "Find a sacrifice," the altar says. That is the whole plan, and it is told to you one line at a time while you learn the controls: kick an enemy to knock its bone out, grab the bone, carry it to the altar and sacrifice it.

Every sacrifice summons something to help you: a meteor that crashes down among the monsters or a volley of bullets, chosen at random. Meanwhile slimes and skulls keep coming for the altar, and the altar can only take a few hits before it breaks. The game is a loop of kicking, grabbing, running and sacrificing against a clock: when the altar falls the run is over and the screen shows how long you lasted, next to your best time of the session.

The game was made by one person in 48 hours for Ludum Dare 55 (theme: "Summoning"), and it shows the right kind of care: a dark red and bone palette, a tutorial that teaches you without a wall of text and a soundtrack of chunky sound effects generated with BFXR.

Playing it here

Click Play and wait for the game to load (about 10 MB, downloaded only when you press the button). The first screen is a short tutorial that waits for you to move, kick, grab and sacrifice. After that the monsters start to come. Your best time is only kept until you close the page.

Controls

Input Action
A / D or Left / Right move
W jump
S grab a bone (or let it go)
Space kick
Gamepad supported (the screen shows the gamepad layout when one is connected)

Tips

Kick, then grab. A kick knocks the bone out of a monster, and you have to pick it up before you can sacrifice it. The bone is the only way to summon help.

Do not stray far from the altar. The monsters go for it, not for you, and the help you summon appears at the altar.

Dodge your own help. The meteors and bullets of the summons hurt you as well, so step away when you make a sacrifice.

Credits and licence

Blood of the Altar was made by Hot Noggin Studios for Ludum Dare 55 and is released under the MIT licence; it uses the author's own StateBot addon (also in the repository). The art was made in Pixelorama and the sounds were generated with BFXR. The pixel font was included by the author in the project as QuestyFont (the font file's metadata names the font editor Pixel Forge, with no other author), and the entry says the author made all the assets within the time limit. It runs on Godot Engine, under the MIT licence (this build is exported with Godot 4.4.1; the game was made with 4.2). The licence texts, the notices of the libraries inside the Godot engine and the source of this build are linked from this page. The game was not changed.
