About the game

Blutfest drops you into a field with a rifle and a crowd of zombies that never stops growing. You see the whole arena from above, move with the keyboard, aim with the mouse and shoot, and the only goal is to stay alive for as long as you can. The clock and your score sit at the top of the screen, and your health and experience bars are at the bottom.

What keeps a round moving is the loot. Zombies drop weapons and power-ups, and every time you level up you choose a new perk. There are more than ten weapons, from a pistol and a shotgun to an icicle gun, a machine gun, a bazooka and a charge gun with a slow orb, and more than thirty perks that change how you fight. Power-ups give you a shield, a burst of speed, extra ammunition or bullets that pierce. No two runs end up with the same build, so the game is really about reading the crowd and choosing the perk that fits the weapon in your hands.

It is a free, open source take on the top-down "Crimsonland" style of shooter, made by one developer with the Godot engine, and the author says it was inspired by an older free game called Bloodworks.

Playing it here

Click Play and wait for the page to load (the game is about 100 MB, downloaded only when you press the button). Then use Play on the main menu. The game runs in your browser with the Godot engine in its single-threaded mode and makes no requests outside this site. Settings and records are stored in your browser. A keyboard and a mouse are needed, and the language can be changed in Options (English, German, French and Spanish).

Tips

Keep moving. Zombies close in from every side. A target that never stops is harder to surround than one that stands still to aim.

Lock a weapon you like. Press L before you walk through a crowd of drops, or you may swap your favourite for something weaker.

Pick perks that fit the gun. A perk that helps the weapon you actually use is worth more than a flashy one for a weapon you will drop in a minute.

Use the open ground. Corners and edges are where you get trapped.

FAQ

Is it a finished game? The author still calls it a work in progress, but it is a complete game you can play from the start screen to the end of a run.

Does it have an Exit button? Not here: a web page cannot close itself, so the button was removed. Close the tab when you are done.

Is it free to share? Yes. It is free software under the GNU GPL v3, and the licences of the sprites, sounds and music are listed below.
