About the game

Bombs fall from the top of a narrow screen toward the ground, where a small turret waits at the bottom centre. You hold the button and move the pointer to turn the turret, and when you let go it fires a single missile along that line. The missile flies until it touches a bomb or leaves the screen, and only then can you shoot again, so every shot has to count.

When the missile reaches a bomb, the bomb blows up into a growing purple ball, and any other bomb that touches that ball explodes too, which makes its own ball, and so on. That is the whole trick of the game: the score for each explosion is bigger than the one before it, so a shot that sets off a long chain is worth far more than several shots that each hit one bomb. The count goes back to one on every new shot.

If a bomb reaches the ground, the game does not end. It freezes and offers two buttons, Rewind and Give Up: hold Rewind to wind time back to any earlier moment, let go, and carry on from there with the same bombs falling again and a chance to aim differently. Give Up ends the run. The pace slowly goes up, though, so there is less and less time to think.

Bomb Rain is one of the two games in Kenta Cho's "rewinders" set. It has no image or sound files: the shapes are drawn by the code and the sound effects are generated while you play. The background song that the original page played was left out of this copy.

Click Play, then press and hold inside the game to start. The score is shown at the top and the best score is only remembered while the page stays open. Nothing is installed or sent anywhere.

Controls

Input Action
Hold and move the pointer (mouse, finger) aim the turret
Release fire a missile
Hold on Rewind after a bomb lands wind time back

A few things worth knowing

Wait for the bombs to bunch up. A missile that hits a group of bombs close together is worth much more than one that hits a lone bomb.

You cannot fire again until the missile is gone. Aim carefully, because a shot that flies off the screen costs you time.

The ground is the only danger. Bombs do not hurt the turret, but each one that lands stops the run until you rewind or give up.

Credits and licence

Bomb Rain was made by Kenta Cho (ABA Games) and published under the MIT licence in the rewinders repository. It runs on the crisp-game-lib and sounds-some-sounds libraries by the same author (MIT), together with pixi.js and pixi-filters (MIT) for its glowing look and lodash.clonedeep (MIT). The licence texts are linked from this page. The files are the ones the author published, with two changes: the background song (an audio file with no licence of its own in the repository) is not included, and the starting page loads the libraries from the game folder instead of from other sites.
