About the game

Capture Go is the easiest way into Go. The rules are the usual ones for placing stones: you take turns putting a stone on an intersection, a group with no free neighbouring points is captured, and suicide and ko are not allowed. The difference is the goal. There is no territory to count: the first player who captures anything wins.

That makes games short and tactical, and it teaches the one skill that everything else in Go depends on, which is watching liberties. You can play the computer at three levels, a friend on the same screen, or let the computer play itself.

A few things worth knowing

Count liberties every move. Yours and the opponent's.

Do not fill your own liberties. Stay connected and keep room around your stones.

Use the edges. Stones on the edge have fewer liberties, which makes them easier to capture.

Credits and licence

Capture Go is one of the games in LittleJS Arcade, a collection by Frank Force built on his open-source LittleJS engine and released under the MIT licence. The pictures are drawn in code and the sounds are synthesised, so the game has no image or audio files. The author's repository includes AI-assistant guidance files, so the collection was written with the help of AI tools. The licence text is linked from this page and the source code is on GitHub.
