About the game
Carazu is a side-scrolling platformer about a small mouse in a fantasy world where nearly everything wants to hurt him. Each level is a stretch of ground, ledges and floating blocks that scrolls in every direction, with a door somewhere along the way. Reach the door, press Up, and the next level begins.
There are 22 levels in three worlds: grassy plains, then dark mines, then a city built on clouds. Slimes crawl along the floor, birds swoop in, turrets fire at you, spiked balls slide back and forth, and rows of spikes kill on contact. Springs launch you up or sideways and moving platforms carry you across gaps. Carazu has three hearts; touching an enemy or a shot costs one, and the hearts you find along the way refill them.
Three runes change the way you play. The Fermata Rune lets you jump a second time in mid-air, the Bass Rune gives you a cannon that fires musical blasts, and the Allegro Rune makes you run faster. Levels are also scattered with bubbles, and hidden doors lead to secret bonus levels.
Playing it here
This is a homebrew game made for the Game Boy: a new game by an independent developer, not a commercial release. It runs here in binjgb, a Game Boy emulator compiled to WebAssembly, from a ROM we built from the author's source code. Click Play, then press X on NEW GAME.
The game saves your run at the start of every level, in the cartridge's battery memory, which is kept in this browser; CONTINUE picks it up from the title screen. Your best time and bubble count are saved the same way. F2 also saves the full state of the emulator at any moment and F4 brings it back. A gamepad works too. The game is in English, with very little text.

A few things worth knowing
Spikes are instant. Enemies and their shots take one heart, but spikes end the attempt at once, whatever your hearts. After a fall you start the level again with two hearts.
Bounce off the springs. Springs are often the only way up a wall or across a long gap, and side-facing ones fling you much farther than a jump.
Keep an eye out for odd doors. A few levels hide a second door that leads to a bonus level. The secrets you collect there are shown on the title screen from then on.
The ending keeps score. When you finish, the game shows how many bubbles you gathered and how long the run took, and tells you when you have set a new record.

Carazu was written in Game Boy assembly by Martin Holtkamp, who also made the graphics, the levels, the music and the sound effects, and released it in 2016.
