About the game
Castle Wars boils a war game down to a handful of numbers. The board is a block of green voxels seen from an angle, and on it sit castles: yours are blue, the enemy's are red, and the grey ones belong to no one. Every castle carries a number, the troops inside it, and that number keeps growing while it stands.
Your turn is any moment you like, because the game never stops. Pick a castle of yours, send some of its soldiers at another castle, and if you arrive with more than they have, it becomes yours and starts producing for you. The enemy plays the same game at the same time, so you win by being faster and by choosing which fights to pick. You can also spend troops on upgrading a castle so that it grows faster.
The first level is a tutorial with hints that appear on the board, and then there is a list of levels to choose from. Castle Wars was made for js13kGames 2023 by mefistofel, with the code, the voxel models and the sounds all small enough to fit in 13 KB.
Playing it here
Click Play and then Start. The menu lets you pick a level with the arrows next to the level name. A game is played with the mouse; there is no touch layout, so on a phone it is awkward because the right-click is needed. Nothing is saved.
Controls
| Input | Action |
|---|---|
| left-click on a blue castle | select it |
| right-click on another castle | send troops from the selected castle |
| right-click on the selected castle | upgrade it, if it has enough troops |
| Esc | go back one menu |
A few things worth knowing
Grey castles are free growth. Capture the neutral ones first: each one is an extra producer, and the enemy wants them too.
Do not empty a castle. A castle with no troops left falls to the first soldier who reaches it, so keep some at home.
Upgrade when the front is quiet. An upgrade costs troops now and pays back over time, so it is best done when no one is coming.
