About the game
A black cat sits by a pond with its paw over the water, and the fish swim by. You have about thirty seconds, shown as a countdown in the corner, to catch as many as you can. Goldfish, salmon, puffer fish and other small things drift across the screen from the edges, each at its own speed, and the cat's paw is always where you left it, so you have to read where a fish will be before you swipe.
The controls are two buttons' worth of thinking. The arrow keys slide the paw around the pond. The A button sends it swinging in an arc, and anything the paw touches on the way is caught. When the time is up the game stacks every fish you caught into a tower on the shore next to the cat, one at a time, with a splash for each, and the cat's mood and the jingle change with how well you did.
Playing it here
This is a homebrew game made for the Game Boy Advance: a new game by independent developers, not a commercial release. It runs here in mGBA, a Game Boy Advance emulator compiled to WebAssembly. Click Play now and press A (the X key) on the title screen. F2 saves the emulator state in this browser and F4 brings it back.
Controls
| Key | GBA button | Action |
|---|---|---|
| Arrow keys | Control Pad | move the paw |
| X | A | swipe the paw; start from the title screen |
| Shift | Select | end the round early |
| Z, Enter | B, Start | continue on the title and end screens |
| F2 / F4 | — | save / load the emulator state |
A few things worth knowing
Swipe where the fish will be. The paw takes a moment to swing, so aim ahead of a moving fish instead of at it.
Sit near the middle. Fish come in from every edge, so a paw in the middle of the pond reaches the most of them.
There is no penalty for missing. You can swipe as often as you like, so keep the paw swinging.
Credits and licence
Cat Fish is by Auberon López (code) and Matt Phan (graphics), made for the GBA Jam 2026 on the Butano engine. Code and graphics are released under the MIT licence. The title and ending music and the sound effects are public domain / CC0: "Talking Cute Chiptune" by Pro Sensory, "Gone Fishin" by You're Perfect Studio, "Apple Cider Juiced" by Zane Little Music, and short effects by 0new4y, EZduzziteh, spuispuin and jalastram, all from OpenGameArt. The author does not publish a ready-made ROM in the repository, so the one served here was compiled from the project's source code, leaving out one unused picture of a branded snack bag.
