About the game

Cathedral Builder starts with a single button and an empty page. Click Dig and a piece of rock appears. Collect a little and a second button opens, Cut, which turns rock into stone. A few stones later a third one, Build Cathedral, starts to lay them on the ground, and at the edge of the screen a small drawing of a cathedral begins to rise, block by block.

When the basics are done, the game tells you the rules: you have a hundred years to finish. A calendar in the corner starts at the year 1200 and runs a month at a time, fast, until 1300. From then on more of the game opens up as you build: a gold resource, upgrades that make each click worth more, auto-click boosters that keep digging, cutting and building while you do something else, and bonus tiles that drift across the screen and give you a handful of resources if you catch them. The question is how to spend what you earn so that the cathedral is finished before the calendar runs out.

If the years run out before the last stone is placed, the game ends and you can try again. If you finish in time, you get a short congratulation. Either way, a second attempt is a chance to try a better order of upgrades.

Homer Dilpleu made Cathedral Builder for js13kGames 2023, whose theme was the 13th century, and built it on a small 2D engine of his own. The whole game had to fit in 13 KB. The cathedral is drawn by the code, and the music is generated by the code too, as a gentle arpeggio.

Playing it here

Click Play, then click your way through the two short introduction screens. Press Dig until you have some rock, press Cut to make stone and then Build Cathedral to begin. From there the game guides you with new buttons as they unlock. Nothing is saved between visits, and a restart is always one click on TRY AGAIN. The game plays music, so check your volume.

A few things worth knowing

Automate early. Auto-clickers cost little at first and the price rises as you buy them. The earlier you have them, the more they will build for you while you collect the rest.

Watch the calendar. A hundred years is a lot of months, and they go by quickly. Keep an eye on how much of the cathedral is done compared to how much time is left.

Catch the bonuses. Those drifting tiles are free resources, and they are worth a quick click.
