About the game
Twelve pieces a side start on the dark squares of an eight-by-eight board. Pieces move one square diagonally forward, and jump over an enemy piece to capture it, and a jump is mandatory when one is available. A piece that reaches the far row is crowned a king and can move and jump in both directions. Capture or block all of your opponent's pieces to win.
You can play against the computer at easy, medium or hard (hard is the default and thinks several moves ahead), play a friend on the same screen, or sit back and watch the computer play itself. Legal moves are highlighted when you pick a piece, so the forced-capture rule never catches you off guard.
Playing it here
Click Play against the computer (or choose another mode), then click one of your pieces and one of the highlighted squares. Difficulty is in Options.

A few things worth knowing
Keep your back row. Pieces at home stop the opponent from crowning a king.
Trade when ahead. Even exchanges favour the side with more pieces.
Look for double jumps. A sacrifice that forces a capture can set one up.
Credits and licence
Checkers is one of the games in LittleJS Arcade, a collection by Frank Force built on his open-source LittleJS engine and released under the MIT licence. The pictures are drawn in code and the sounds are synthesised, so the game has no image or audio files. The author's repository includes AI-assistant guidance files, so the collection was written with the help of AI tools. The licence text is linked from this page and the source code is on GitHub.
